This is a small Pinot Noir only operation producing wines of very high quality. As well as the wines rated below a tiny amount of wine is produced from the Two Sisters vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The Hunnicutt bottling comes from a site just a few miles inland of the coast. Although typically cool in climate the intensity of the red berry fruit character is helped by the level of* sun exposure the vineyard gets. Both the Mendocino wines have remarkable depth and persistence. The Savoy Vineyard bottling is marked not just by ripe and pure notes of dark berry and cherry but also by its minerality and fresh acid structure. Planted on the eastern slopes of the Anderson Valley the vines crop at barely more than a ton and a half to the acre. The Oppenlander site, like the Savoy is planted to a range of clones adding to the wines potential complexity. The climate is a touch cooler with the vineyard planted at a slightly higher altitude. This shows in the wine which is a tighter, more structured example. Subtle blueberry fruit needs time to express itself. All the wines are aged in a mix of new and used oak and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. (DM)

I need to learn more about proprietors Stewart Dorman and Jane Farrell, who are producing some of the New World’s most extraordinary Pinot Noirs. I was blown away by their 2001 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard, an exquisitely singular effort offering aromas of melted blueberries, intermixed with hints of smoke as well as new oak. This dense ruby-colored Pinot possesses gorgeously rich black fruits, a seamless integration of acidity, wood, and tannin, full body, and tremendous purity as well as stature. A stunning expression of Pinot Noir, it represents the essence of the varietal and the vineyard. Drink it over the next 5-8 years. The 2001 Pinot Noir Two Sisters Vineyard, while a mere mortal, is still outstanding. Notes of cola, root beer, cinnamon, and allspice jump from the glass of this medium ruby colored 2001. Totally different from its sibling, it exhibits complex aromatics, loads of fruit, and medium body. Drink it over the next 3-5 years.

The impressive 2002’s include the light ruby-colored 2002 Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard, a medium-bodied, delicate effort revealing a big sweet, strawberry and cherry nose, and focused broad, seamless flavors of pomegranate and earth. It can be drunk now or cellared for 5-6 years. The 2002 Pinot Noir Two Sisters Vineyard is a nuanced, medium bodied Pinot possessing an elegance and delicacy rarely found in the New World. Notes of flowers, berries, cherries, and minerals emerge from this introspective Pinot Noir. The more one sniff and swallows, the more nuances become apparent. This is an understated wine that requires respect as well as admiration. It should drink well for 4-5 years. The 2002 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard’s bouquet merits 96 points as it is one of the most complete, complex grand cru Pinot Noirs one could ever smell from the New World. Forest floor, flower garden, sweet cherry, strawberry, crushed rocks, and smoky game-like scents represent an aromatic tour de force. The flavors are not quite at the same level, but they are superb nevertheless. This is a medium dark ruby-colored Pinot possesses gorgeous sweetness as well as an expansive mouth feel yet an ethereal lightness. Drink this remarkable Pinot Noir over the next 5-6 years

Sweet on the attack, with superb definition as well as richness without heaviness, this impressive Pinot will drink well for 5-6 years

93 RATING - The Wine Advocate

"Sadly, there are only 180 cases of this profound Pinot Noir. It boasts an opaque purple color as well as a super-ripe bouquet of black fruits, smoky oak, grilled meats, and berry jam. Full-bodied, exceptionally well-delineated, with admirable fruit, purity, and intensity, this statuesque Pinot Noir can be drunk over the next 7-8 years."

90 RATING - Wine Spectator, September 15, 2000

"Smooth and polished, with plum, black cherry, wild berry and floral notes; a touch of herb and cedar. Supple tannins."

93 RATING - Insider's Wine Line, Volume 3, Number 5

"... A perfumed nose of cherry, ripe strawberry, raspberry, forest floor, mint, dry citrus zest with pepper and clove highlights. The flavors of raspberry, pie cherry, mint, tea and black pepper are very rich and complex followed by a fruity, spicy, expansive finish."
